Runs very large?

I love the style of this dress and it looks like a good fit for my body type, but the sizing was way off. I ordered a size 10 (12 was not available) and it was huge on me. It seemed like a size 14 at the very least. I returned it and ordered a size 8 (which I never wear). Hopefully, that will work...
