Runbold Iv Pant - Men's

These are my absolute favorite hiking and backpacking pants, especially in the heat. I conduct field surveys at the height of summer in the arid west and the nylon stays cool, protects from the sun, and breathes extremely well. They fit little large on me, but the adjustable waistband is fantastic. I do wish the belt loops on the newest version were a little more stout. The pants are thin but robust, and while I haven’t had issues around spiny plants so far, I wouldn’t do any serious bushwhacking with them. They dry very quickly and wash easily. 5 stars!

The struggle to find good out pants is real at 6' 5". After doing some research, I came across mammut hiking pants with the long option and decided to try it out. Fantastically light weight and durable. The fabric is not at all water resistant but the pants dry out fast so not much of an issue. The inseam in the long option is perfect for my height and the velcro hip fasteners dials in the fit for in between sizes. On par with outdoor research ferrosi but more techy with pockets and zippers.

Runbold pants are my favorite lightweight pant for climbing and hiking, especially in the warmer months. I've worn them for years, from the older version to this new version. The new version retains the nice thin nylon material, which is perfect for climbing, scrambling or hiking. It's very stretchy, and I've found it to also be very durable over the years. I have several generations of Runbold pants, and I've never torn a hole in any of them. There are two recent changes that I'm not a huge fan of: the velcro waist adjustment system, and the new big thigh pocket (which makes these pants more like the Prana Stretch Zion pants). I'd love for Mammut to go back to simple belt loops, since the material is stretchy enough to accommodate a bit of waist size variance, and since velcro is always a liability to other items of clothing. The big new thigh pocket might be a plus or a minus, depending on whether you like to use that sort of pocket - for me, it's just extra material in a place where I'm not going to store anything while I climb anyway. I'd love to be able to just buy the original Runbold, but this new version is still great. It's a perfect weight for backpacking, hiking, and climbing, and I highly recommend it for any of those activities when it isn't very cold outside.
