Double Breasted Wool Trench Coat

I bought this last fall, it's become a favorite that I have worn often—a very good investment piece that I will wear for a long time. I bought it to go with skirts (saw it pictured that way) and it is the just-right jacket I've needed to go with my long skirts. Love the style, coziness and neutral color. Great for fall and spring weather. I'm tall and slender and bought the xs—perfect fit.

I just saw this coat at the store. This double-faced wool is devine... very soft and drapey / almost like a thick sweater material. The wide arms allowed it to slide over my poplin shirt without the usual tugging I have to do with unlined wool. Great design: wide arms, welt pockets, two buttons, back vent, swingy and feminine. Seems very upscale. This would be the perfect car coat EXCEPT there is no lining... how long will this soft wool keep its structure without a lining? A lining prevents pressure on the fabric, so the elbows, shoulders, and length won't stretch out and become wonky (e.g., think hanger marks on sweaters). Wool stretches with heat and pressure... my butt and heated car seat will surely stretch make it's mark on the first long drive. $250 would be a no brainer, but once something hits that $500 mark, it needs to last more than one season. I've been an EF customer since 1995 when I bought my first pair of ponte-like pants which I still have today - with no pilling whatsoever between my thighs!! Current EF fabrics don't last like that... maybe I get 2 seasons out of them. I understand that you need to stay profitable, but your discerning clients will pay for quality.

This coat has no lining. You would think at that price point it would be a more substantial item. I am worried that it won’t hold its shape over time. It is nice and soft but I am undecided. I have been wearing EF clothes since she started and usually am not ever disappointed. I am this time. It is cute and looks fine on but how long would it be fine? I would not have ordered it if I had known it was unlined. I used no emoji but you said I did. A bit ridiculous, don’t you think?

I tried to make this coat work. The color washes me out, sleeves are 2” too long, and that lapel is too large. I tried my usual size, a size smaller (my height 5’4”) and different scarfs…blah! I normally love EF doubleface wool, but the material used for this coat I think is not as substantial as last years doubleface wool cloud vest🤷‍♀️ I gave it two stars instead of one because it may work for some of you and i didn’t want to discourage everyone from this piece, and it has welt pockets👍 I am so tired of patch pockets!
