Waste
Plastic waste generation in the U.S. is predicted to soar to over 140 million metric tons by 2060, impacting human health, environmental pollution and biodiversity threats. Reducing waste is an ongoing journey, and we're continuously driving toward a smaller waste footprint.
Mapping Our Waste Impact
To reduce our impact, we first need to understand it. We have performed a comprehensive analysis of waste across Nordstrom facilities, uncovering waste hotspots and opportunities for improvement. Thanks to this exercise, we've identified stores as a key opportunity for greater focus. As such, we are working to map store waste flows—understanding volumes, identifying inefficiencies and assessing the infrastructure needed to support more sustainable waste management.
Addressing Our Packaging Footprint
We're hearing from customers and employees that lower-impact packaging is a priority, which is why we have made it a central focus of our wider waste efforts. Across our stores, deliveries, restaurants and operations, we are looking for opportunities to reduce unnecessary packaging use, increase recycled content and switch to lower-impact material options.
In particular, we look to minimize single-use plastic waste in our value chain, particularly via packaging and delivery activities. We are continually working to replace single-use plastics with alternatives like paper, reusable packaging and recovered plastics.
