Emissions Reductions
The retail industry is responsible for up to 25% of global emissions and, as such, we have a role to play in reducing our collective impact. At Nordstrom, we're actively working to decrease our footprint, with clear emissions-reduction targets that have been accepted and validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
Our Emissions Reduction Targets:
- 42% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by FY2030 from a FY2021 base year
- 42% reduction in absolute Scope 3 emissions from purchased goods and services and upstream transportation and distribution by FY2030 from a FY2021 base year
When it comes to minimizing our footprint, we start with the areas where we have the greatest influence—our operations. We're also tackling our indirect emissions, inspiring our key suppliers to develop their own science-aligned emissions targets. At the same time, we're encouraging brand partners to adopt more sustainable practices, such as responsible material use and manufacturing energy efficiencies. And, to reduce emissions associated with delivering brand product orders, we are updating processes to cut the number of unnecessary miles that deliveries must cover.
Investing in Renewable Energy
We are continually looking for ways to enhance efficiency and reduce emissions associated with facility energy use. As well as finding ways to reduce electricity consumption, we look for opportunities to source more renewable energy. In 2023, we installed on-site solar on our Short Hills and Cherry Hill locations in New Jersey. This was our first foray into on-site renewables generation. In future years, we aim to install on-site solar on other facilities.
While we explore options to increase on-site solutions, we are meeting more of our energy needs with renewables through the purchase of renewable energy credits (RECs). With these RECs, we also look to support projects that advance the availability of renewable energy solutions for communities. For example, through REC purchases, we have supported PosiGen, a company committed to making solar power accessible and affordable to all homeowners.
