Details & care

From desert belays to unpredictable alpine weather, the Black Diamond Alpenglow Pro Hooded Top is designed to keep us protected and comfortable in the elements. Its UPF 50+ fabric shields us from harsh sun exposure during long climbs or backcountry missions, while the environmentally friendly Empel PFC-free DWR finish adds reliable water resistance to fend off unexpected drizzles. Built for movement and performance, this top features HeiQ Pure underarm mesh panels that enhance breathability and control odors, so we stay fresh even during multi-day adventures. The elasticized hood fits snugly over a helmet for added protection, and thumb loops keep the sleeves securely in place when layering or reaching high. With a harness-compatible fit, a zippered chest pocket for stashing small essentials, and a quarter-zip for easy venting, the Alpenglow Pro is an essential layer for any mission where the sun and elements are in full force.

Amazing Alpenglow Pro Hoody!

Alpenglow Pro Hoody far out performs any sun hoody I have owned. I work and recreate in the mountain west region and need high performance, multifunctional gear. I have many other sun hoodies from prominent outdoor retailers that do not compare. This is the only sun hoody that does not feel like wearing a hot wet angora sweater in the sun. The material is highly durable(no snags or pilling) and has a cooling feel even when dry! Perfect! I purchased two and plan to order several more! Highly recommended!

Dozens of pills after 1 day of use

I wore this hoody for the first time out climbing yesterday and when I got home noticed dozens of pulls in the fabric and even a small hole from one of them. This type of wear is expected after a whole season - but 1 day??? Bummer. Wish they used more durable fabrics. Maybe a good hiking/backpacking sun hoody, but doesnt hold up on rocks.

Great other than a zipper issue

The seam at the base of the top zipper came out and has made the zipper extremely difficult to zip up if it goes into the hole.

Love it!

This was purchased as a sun shirt but has evolved into an anytime I’m hiking/ biking or outside. I am 5’2”, short torso, athletic shoulders and body- think rectangle not pear or apple- and weigh 122#. I purchased a small. I have a +2 ape index thumb holes fit perfectly. Just buy it, you won’t regret it!

Alpenglow Pro is the Best Sunshirt

I just purchased my 2nd Alpenglow Pro because I loved my first one so much. I wear it backpacking, hiking, peak bagging, traveling, on safari in Africa etc. The fabric and side vents truly keep you comfortable in the heat and it does not get smelly. I can wash it in a sink or stream while traveling and it dries very quickly. Only complaint is the color choices for females. The fig color is beautiful but their other woman's colors are pretty bad and have been since I discovered them. I recommend spending the extra money and getting the pro over the regular alpenglow hoody.

Put it to work

Out of the package I wore this on climb up superstition peak. Yes, it got pulls, but thats expected from the cactus spines - most everything I own has them. The hood feels like a built in a/c. Could get about 3 hikes usage before needing wash from odor, so not bad. And thats including alot of sweat!

Great in many ways, but not breathable enough

I really love this hoodie in so many ways. It's the best sun coverage I've found -- the hood is actually big enough that it provides protection for the face rather than just the neck, and the zip is just really convenient. But after feeling like I was suffocating in it on some hikes above the treeline, I went back to an older hoodie from another brand. The improvement in breathability was staggering. (But my face burned because the hood wasn't big enough!) So BD, I'm begging you -- make a version of this in one of the ultralight grid fabrics that breathes better. That would be perfect for a lot of folks/situations!
