What it is: A clean mineral SPF 50 with a refreshing serum texture that balances skin with 8-hour oil control and up to 24-hour hydration in two flexible shades.

What it does: This breakthrough mineral sunscreen feels like a serum and works like SPF. Sun Serum combines SPF 50 sun protection with a weightless feel and powerful skincare benefits. The clean formula hydrates for up to 24 hours, controls oil and shine for 8 hours and strengthens the skin’s moisture barrier. It offers extended spectrum protection from UVA, UVB, visible and infrared light. It refreshes skin on contact with a water-burst texture that quenches and revives, and it sinks in quickly and layers smoothly under makeup.

- Hyaluronic Acid: 7 molecular weights draw hydration into skin to visibly plump and replenish
- Skin-Balancing Botanicals: Rhodiola Root and Echinacea Extracts help control oil and reduce the look of pores

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I am not a “normal” foundation girl, I never used to wear it and the older I get I need some coverage, but worry about the wrinkles foundations give me... this one offers light coverage, and doesn’t look like makeup. I apply some powder and I am all set for the day. Really nice color, a bit of coverage, and stays all day.

Got this as a sample . Loved the color on my skin but the texture was really gritty. Since this was sent as a sample, maybe it’s an old stock?

My go-to sunscreen.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love the Ilia sun serum mineral sunscreen with SPF 50. It's what I wear most of the time. It goes on smoothly, never streaks and lasts all day on a normal indoor/outdoor day. I love the subtle tint too. The container is fun and the top stays on even when loose in a beach bag.

Too dark, heavy on the skin, difficult packaging

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Been using the light-medium shade for a while now. It’s a little too tinted for my fair skin but I still use it because I haven’t found a new product yet that’s also on the cleaner ingredient side. When using the amount needed to get the spf 50 benefit, it’s heavy and tacky on the skin even after it dries. Please design a better bottle. Maybe use a slight tear drop shape so when you’re trying to get the last bit out, the product can funnel to the opening.

The clear winner in my sunscreen odyssey!

Unlike the claim made by most other products at all price points, this one does actually feel like you have nothing on once it settles in. At first I was confused about the texture (it is very slightly grainy) but this particular formulation is much easier to spread on your skin in the even and substantial layer required to actually hit the advertised spf. Whatever makes it feel grainy on your fingertips when you first put it on does not seem to linger once you spread it around – so maybe that's what the water burst technology thing is. I've tried all of the other fancy and inexpensive lightweight sunscreens, and while they all seem to come out of the bottle with a similar texture and weight, this is the only one that does not irritate my sensitive skin or eventually leave it feeling dry and parched. I do tend to the dry side with my 50 something skin, and have only recently added sunscreen to my routine (after starting tretinoin). Most feel heavy, greasy and irritating no matter how long I wait between layers. For reference I use exosomes+dna repairasome serum in the am with a rich barrier repair cream. PM I use estrogen face cream under tretinoin followed by le balm for a heavy moisture seal. This is to to illustrate that I employ substantial moisturizering and love that this product is light enough not to feel heavy or act occlusive after my other products. I've tried with other sunscreens to use a lighter lotion or skip the moisturizer altogether, but find that after a few hours my skin loses the dewy texture and just feels dry and uncomfortable. But if your skin is not as dry and you're using multiple active serums in the am that are giving you what you need (moisture, antioxidants, peptides, etc) , you could probably skip the moisturizer and just do the serum - it does an excellent job with moisture retention and doesn't leave your skin feeling dry after a few hours.

Works!
