Best road to trail sneaker PERIOD!
After logging 264 miles across roads, trails, mixed terrain, snow, and freezing creek crossings, the Nike Pegasus Trail 5 GORE-TEX has proven itself as one of the most versatile shoes I’ve run in.
Fit & Comfort
Right out of the gate, the fit stood out. The toe box is nicely sized—roomy enough to allow natural toe splay without feeling sloppy. This is especially important for longer efforts, and it shines here.
I’ve run these with:
SealSkinz waterproof socks for long snow runs and sub-freezing creek crossings
Base-layer wool socks for normal cold or wet conditions
In both cases, the fit remained dialed. No pressure points, no bunching, and no compromises in comfort.
GORE-TEX Performance
The GORE-TEX upper works exactly as advertised. My feet stay dry in snow, slush, rain, and water crossings. When paired with waterproof socks, this setup is borderline unstoppable in winter conditions. For cold-weather running, this combo has become my go-to.
Midsole & Ride
The biggest surprise—and highlight—for me is the ReactX foam. In my experience, it’s far better than ZoomX. It strikes a near-perfect balance:
Cushioned without feeling mushy
Responsive without being harsh
Stable across uneven terrain
It’s not a “mega-fast” racing foam, but that’s not the point. This is a shoe built to handle training miles and still be race-worthy, especially for longer efforts or rough conditions.
Break-In Period
There is a break-in period—about 20 miles. Early on, the shoe feels a bit stiff, but once broken in, it completely opens up. After that point, the ride becomes smooth, confident, and comfortable mile after mile.
Versatility
This is where the Pegasus Trail 5 GORE-TEX really shines.
Road → Trail → Road: Excellent
Mixed terrain runs: Outstanding
Straight road running: Surprisingly good
Winter conditions: Elite
If you’re doing 100% trail running, I’d still recommend the Wildhorse 10 (which I also own and use). But if your runs include any combination of pavement, dirt, gravel, snow, or transitional terrain, the Pegasus Trail 5 is hard to beat.
Final Verdict
The Nike Pegasus Trail 5 GORE-TEX is an incredibly capable all-around shoe. It’s not chasing extreme speed—it’s built for reliability, comfort, and versatility. After 264 miles, it has earned my trust in conditions where footing, warmth, and dryness actually matter.
If you want one shoe that can handle:
Daily training
Long runs
Winter weather
Road-to-trail transitions
Even race day if needed
…the Pegasus Trail 5 GORE-TEX absolutely delivers.
Highly recommended.

Heel Slip
Like many other reviews point out, the heel slips when walking or running. I also own the regular Pegasus Trail 5 (without GORE-TEX) and don't experience the issue with those. It's a great shoe otherwise, but the feeling of the shoe being loose is not confidence-inducing when running on the trails!

everything is very bad
These are terrible! They're unwearable! The protruding seam inside the sneakers is incredibly painful. I think they're defective! I even tried making the sneakers looser by loosening the laces, but the white seam where the tongue sits under the laces still presses on the top of my foot. I don't recommend buying them!

Instep too tight, poor heel.
The instep is narrow with no extra room for expansion. As your foot expends, the stitched section under the tongue will choked and pressed against the dorsal side of your foot causing pain. The heel fabric has too much movement.

Poor heel design
No heel support. Heels feel like they are slipping out of the shoe with every step. That feeling is not ideal for hiking, trail running or even just walking about. Poor design in the heel box, too low. Rest of the shoe is great but the heel is a major design flaw

0 Heel Lock-In
I don't know who designed these shoes, but no matter how you tie the laces, they will not lock yoir heel in. There is some sort of weird ridge inside the shoe that sits just below your heel that forces your heel out of the shoe. Would not recommend if you're trying to trail run. They look super-cool tho!

Retains the vibe of Pegasus trail
Better midsole with more rebounce than the 4th generation. My feet got wet after walking in the rain.
