I can confidently say this is the warmest, most durable puffy in my quiver and undoubtedly my new favorite insulated jacket. The Helium XT Down jacket is tough enough to be an outer layer on crisp, dry days and compact enough to fit in your pack or layer under an OR Gore-Tex shell. With confidence, I highly recommend this puffer to anyone seeking industry-leading, professional warmth. I'm honored that OR gave me this free product to test in exchange for my honest review. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this product for free in exchange for my honest review. y first impression of the Outdoor Research Helium XT Down Hoodie was mixed, as the drawcord hem snapped and detached the first time I adjusted it, which was frustrating right out of the box and raised early durability concerns. After fixing it with a stopper knot, however, the jacket has performed well overall. I'm 5'10“ and about 140 pounds, and the medium fits well for my typical layering system, allowing room for a wool base layer, heavier mid-layer, and even a vest without feeling restrictive; for a trimmer fit with minimal layering, I'd size down. The hood adjusts easily, fits well over a climbing helmet for belaying, and cinches down nicely without one, while overall mobility is excellent for hiking and climbing. I've found it most effective between roughly 15°F and 45°F, both for cool-weather belays and as a mid-layer in winter for ice climbing, with good warmth and wind protection. It does absorb moisture quickly and isn't ideal as an outer layer in wet or mixed conditions, though. In regard to packability, the jacket packs down to about the size of a Nalgene in its hand pocket, making it great for day trips, although it's a bit bulky for multi-day trips. Aside from the initial drawcord failure and some minor fabric fraying near the zipper, durability has been solid with no insulation issues, and despite the early quality control hiccups, I'd still recommend the Helium XT as a warm, versatile down layer for cold, dry conditions, with sizing chosen carefully based on layering needs.
