Rocky hilltop
I live on a heavily forested rocky hilltop. These shoes are the only ones I can safely walk up and down with.

I bought these because I need a waterproof shoe and I have been very happy with other Merrell shoes. I've had these a month and the first time it rains my feet are wet! Not Happy Bob!!!

Had to return, left shoe was great, right shoe had defect in arch, extremely uncomfortable. There were no other shoes in my size, so returned for refund

Not Goretex?
When I picked them out on their website I had waterproof and Goretex selected, because I have had very good results with Goretex, and they will stand by the waterproof warranty even if the manufacturer doesn't. These do not appear to have Goretex, doesn't say it anywhere on the product itself....but they are waterproof so far because I have been in some slop and slush. Support seems to be very good also and nice and lightweight

Alverstone 2
After speaking to someone with Merrill concerning my narrow foot width, they suggested the Alverstone 2. I have only been on two hikes so they’re not fully broken in yet, but I do find them to be lighter and perhaps a little more narrow than my previous Merrill hiking boots.
