I was denied the ability to return a BRAND NEW ite

My daughter had a miscarriage so I went into Nordstrom to return this item, however, even though book had never been opened or removed from box- I was told I could not return a purchase from a 3rd party. How?? I bought this off of Nordstrom’s website??? Bad business practice! How do I return??
