poorly packed so broke in shipping

Earrings look beautiful but Nordstrom shipped them in a envelope and without a box, so I was unsurprised to find they were totally broken through shipping. What has happened to Nordstrom?! How in the world does the company ship something delicate like earrings without placing them in a box at the very least?!
