'Retreat' Backpack

I bought this online because it wasn't available at my local store to see in person, and it had great reviews. Things I liked about it: the style. The leather straps were cool, and the light grey color was a nice neutral. I also liked that it had a laptop sleeve, since I bought the bag as a commuter bag. Things I didn't like: the size of the bag. The bag felt really big on my 5'4" frame and the straps were a little uncomfortable because of the way they curve in. Even though the straps have magnetic closures, you still need to line the closures to get them to close, so it's essentially just like having buttons that snap there instead, which I personally found to be annoying. I also didn't like that there weren't any interior pockets to hold things like headphones, phone, keys, wallet, or makeup. I thought I could compensate by carrying smaller makeup-like cases inside the backpack, but that also got really annoying as well. Ultimately after 3 days I returned this bag for another brand.

I bought this in black. I first ordered the "Post" by Herschel because it was simpler in design and more my style, but it was WAY too small for my needs (more like an average/large purse size). This is a little sportier (ugly straps for no reason), but does have significantly more space (I can add a full sweater and water bottle and odds and ends more than the Post). It is still smaller than I anticipated...it is thickly padded with a padded computer sleeve that eats up space. The outer pocket holds an iPhone and nothing else. You cannot tightly pack it, as then the magnetic closures won't reach and the bag flaps open. I have an ancient L.L. Bean that holds loads more with outer pockets etc....what you would need for a real hike. This Herschel suits my urban needs though-- dressier than average packs, slim to the back for crowds, and carries enough stuff for my toddler and me to explore the zoo with a lunch packed too.
