Stone and glass, the form defined by the carving on the base. The base stacks in tiers — a wider lower section, a narrower upper — both worked in close relief, the grooves running in one continuous direction across the surface. A recess at the top holds the candle; the glass rises clear and straight above. The wind has been at the windows since they sat down. Inside, the table is set — two places, the candle burning well into the evening, the dinner unhurried. Someone brought more wine. The piece has not shifted from where it was first placed, the room holding steady around it, the night loud outside.
