Woven Gingham Shirtdress

This dress is extremely well made, with tailoring rarely if ever found in a dress in this price range. The lining is a lovely bonus (probably necessary because most women don't own slips or petticoats these days). BUT, the construction is just plain odd. The waist is the smallest measurement, as you might expect. However, since most people have hips/butts and usually also a bustline that is larger than their waist area, shirtwaists USUALLY open from collarbone to pelvic area for ease of donning and undonning. I went through incredible contortions to get this dress on, and then off again. Then when I read the reviews I learned in fact it has a VERY well concealed side zipper. But even with that feature, it is a pain to take on and off. BTW, what would really sell me on this dress is a TALL version!

This dress is darn cute on, especially if your figure is slim or hourglass. The pattern is such that it doesn't make you appear heavier. The quality is excellent, and the fabric is a little heavier than I expected, more of a cotton duck than a light cotton. The length is at or just below the knee. I have been wearing a 14 or 16 due to a recent weight gain and found the 14 fit well. Because I am a perfectionist I returned the dress because the side-view made me look thick. I will reorder when I have lost some weight.

I just tried this on in store and I think it's just adorable! I'm usually a 6 or 8 in Eliza j and the 6 fit perfectly. It's fun and flirty and has pockets! I had plenty of room in the bust but I am very small in that area. I'm 5'7" 125 lbs and my measurements are 34-39-37

I’m a sucker for vintage-inspired shirtdresses and had to try this on when I spotted it in-store. I’m 5’3”, 120 pounds, 34A-28-38. I usually buy petite dresses and often have to have them altered in some way - bodice taken in, length shortened. The petite version of this dress wasn’t available in-store, but I was surprised the regular size 2 fit fairly well. The bodice wasn’t too wide, and the dress fell to the bottom of my knees, just a touch lower than on the model. I’m short-waisted, with longer legs, and don’t usually wear petite pants, so I guess that makes sense. But the arm holes were way too big, and my bra was visible. I may not have had that problem with the petite size, but at 3-4” shorter, it would have been too short - I prefer to wear this style at mid-knee or just above. I love that the dress is lined, the lining provides the perfect amount of pouf to the skirt. The placement of the checks on this dress bothered me though. All the dresses in-store had two columns of white/light blue checks side-by-side at the middle of the bodice, unlike the dresses in the photos here. It just looked strange to me. The belt on the dress I tried was made from the white/light blue checks, instead of the light blue/dark blue checks as shown here, which I prefer. Maybe a slightly smaller-scale gingham would have been better. do not order this dress...terrible fit...wrinkles easily....who in their right mind designed it....no....no...no..sorry...

Usually, I have no problem wearing petite size 2. This dress in that size is very short all over. The bodice length was very short and the waist was way up. The length of the dress was above my knees and made me look like wearing a little girl's dress. I am returning and ordering regular size 2 and see how it goes. I see that there is 4 inches length difference in between reg. size 8 and petite size 8. I think this difference may help fitting to an adult proportion. The fabric weighs heavy for a summer dress. The buttons end at the waist line and there is a side zipper. Wearer has to wear it over the head with very little stretch room because the fabric doesn't stretch.
