Corset Long Sleeve Denim Midi Dress

For reference, I'm 5'2", curvy hourglass type, and usually a 12-14. I was hooked by the photo of the dress, which is a slightly lighter wash than it indicates. But that's OK, as this dress is casual and looks amazing with knee-high brown suede flat boots, tan cowboy boots or pale pink platform slip-ons. I love how it accents the waist with the corset-type stitching, the rough finish and the fact that it's v-neck, which works on large-chested moi. The denim is solid but more of a fall-winter-spring weight than summer, unless it's an unseasonably cool day. That works for me. I live in Canada. It's a little longer than I'm used to but, with the bottom two buttons unbottened, it looks great! Three caveats: Others have said this is "true to size." I ordered an XL because I seemed to be, according to the WashLab size chart, between my usual L (and sometimes M) and XL. I am glad I sized up. Yes, it hugs my curves but it's a snug fit (and I hope it still fits after it comes out of the cold water hang dry wash) that, while it has some stretch, is no XL in my book. So pay attention to the size chart. Which brings me to... The slash side pockets hit at the most unflaterring spot on my body: top of side of my thigh which, if you look at the photo, is hidden by on the model by her thands. That was surely posed on purpose. I'm fortunate to have a good tailor who will cut out the pockets -- I would never use them, especially where they are positioned -- and stitch them up so it doesn't look like my butt has ears. The photo is accurate as to where the bottom of the V-neckline hits. But it's a bit high for me. As a curvy petite, I need to expose more skin (and a hint of cleavage!) So my tailor will remove the top button and sew a bit of the sides down, exposing the darker inner wash which works because the stitching around the waist also shows the darker wash. Points made, I often turn to my seamstress to adjust clothes because I think a good fit is everything. That doesn't bother me. I always factor in adjustment expenses. If it weren't for the pockets, I'd have given this number 5 stars.
