What it is: An eye contour crayon that outlines and accents dramatically, creating a clear, precise line around eyes to enhance their expression.
What it does: It gives a gentle shadow to lids when delicately blended with the sponge applicator. Its texture is extremely smooth with finely dispersed pigments for even, long-lasting wear. Its formula is enriched with vitamin E.
How to use: Sharpen the pencil with the included two-bladed sharpener to assure a precise tip. To contour the eye, draw a dotted line at the base of the lashes and blend. To subtly accent, apply a small quantity and blend with the sponge applicator.

Good if you are not a fan of heavy black liners
I actually like this for the exact reasons other reviewers don't. I am turning 50 this year and my eyelid anatomy is changing. Due to my skin and hair coloring, I need a dark eyeliner, However, a harsh black eyeline no longer looks flattering on me. Therefore, I needed I smudgable black liner for some soft definition. Gels have great staying power, but aren't really smudgable. Kohl's are very smudgable, but run all over the place. I started cleaning out my makeup drawer and found this old classic and gave it one last try and fell in love with it again. I like that it is not extremely black and it is so easy to soften the line, but I don't recommend using the sponge applicator on the other end. It really acts more like an eraser than an applicator. Instead, just use your finger or a smudge brush (I like Laura Mercier, MAC, and Bobbi Brown smudge brushes.) Yes, there are some long-wear pencil eyeliners that you can manipulate for a few seconds right after application, but I find them too soft in consistency to be precise. Examples include Trish McEvoy and Urban Decay. If you are looking for precise application before blending for a softer, smoky look, give this one a try. Finally, I tear frequently due to dry eyes (apparently tear glands over produce to compensate for the dryness), and this pencil stays on all day. My most recent long day was from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and included a tennis match, and my liner stayed put until I washed my face. I should also mention that I only line my top lid, so I can't comment on how this performs on the bottom lid.

Not what I expected.
I have been using Chanel products for a very long time now, and decided to switch from a gel liner, to a pencil. I have never written a bad review, because of how pleased i've been with every single product i've purchased from Chanel. I can easily say this was the worst product i've used so far. I purchased this pencil in black, and noticed after applying many, many layers, I can never achieve the black I'm looking for. It is very light and smears easily. I figured this pencil wouldn't smear at all, after reading the other reviews, but I was completely wrong. By the end of the day, I look like a raccoon and have noticed myself smudging it away from under my eyes throughout the day. I am very unpleased with this product to say the least. I will still give Chanel liners a chance and purchase a liquid liner possibly, but this one was clearly the wrong choice. I will say though, the packaging is very pretty, and the Chanel pencil sharpener it came with was a very nice touch.

Best eyeliner ever!!!!
I have used this eyeliner for years, and it's amazing!! It goes on so smoothly, and I have gotten a few friends to fall in love with it too. No hard pencil on your lid, no pulling the corner of your lid out (like I see many people doing), it just glides on and stays on well. The two reviews stating it does not go on well must not know how to apply eyeliner, or don't care for the application of a pencil liner vs a liquid liner. Coffee Bean is a GREAT dark brown, but is not shown well in the sample above. Violet Smoke is also a great purple. I have a blue called Navy Black which I love, but it appears they may not make it anymore. Denim may be a close alternative, but seemed a little lighter to me in the store. This pencil is DEFINITELY WORTH THE MONEY!! May be a little pricey, but goes on so much better than other less expensive brands, and it's a very long pencil, so you get a lot for your money. This is the only Chanel product I use, all of my other makeup is Bobbi Brown, but this is the only eyeliner I will buy!

There are better options out there!
I like a lot of what Chanel makeup has to offer. I like their mascaras, their foundations, powders, blushes, and skincare. Every so often I come across something that misses the mark, however, and this is an example. It's not to say that the eye definer is an epic fail, it's just that it is a disappointment compared to the quality and performance of other Chanel products and other liners. I have the Chanel liquid liner, which I adore, and I love the Armani la femme bleue limited edition liners from Spring '11. With the Chanel eye definer, I expected to be impressed.
Drawbacks:
-longevity. I would say that my skin is fairly normal (if sensitive). I don't typically have trouble keeping makeup on, but this liner fades quickly (less than two hours) and I find myself reapplying (and I used it on top of an excellent eye primer).
-difficulty in application. I wanted decent pay-off, but I find the pigmentation to be too muted. In trying to get more colour from the product, I had to sacrifice precision in application; I am not fond of wide bands of eye liner. It's just too waxy in texture for my liking.
-cost. I don't mind paying a premium for a great product, but this item did not come close to being worth the price. I will never buy another one of these liners.
Pros:
-colours. Chanel always creates some excellent colours. If you're looking for a twist on a classic colour, as well as the basics, you'll enjoy this range.

Review on 66 Brun-cuivre and Khaki Dore
I got the 66 Brun-cuivre and Khaki Dore. They are very pigmented, smooth in texture, both colors are rich and beautiful. What I didn't like about them is the fact that they are very waxy, once put on they glue my lashes together and feel very heavy and tacky and waxy on. I was very much aware of them being on my eyes. Another thing is that they are not very long lasting, they come off and fade and shift unless you set them with eye shadow. If such texture does not bother you, these are something to look into because the colors are very beautiful.

Brun Teak is lovely but....
....it just doesn't stay on.
The color is great, cool chocolate brown (no red tones here!) and it glides on so creamily. However, it's gone within an hour. I should have known when I swatched it in the store on my wrist and it wiped off within 10 minutes, but I just was bowled over by the creamy texture of the pencil and the great color.
Alas, it wasn't meant to be. Literally. For reference, I don't have oily or hooded lids and most normal (not waterproof or long wearing) pencils last on me without a primer.
I tried this with an excellent primer that I applied right to the area I was going to apply this liner and it still faded. A little slower, but within two hours. It didn't smudge or smear or transfer anywhere. It did a disappearing act that most magicians would be envious of.....and when I went to return it the salesperson told me "Yep, it won't stay on at all."
