19 Degree Aluminum Expandable Carry-On

I purchased this bag largely in part for the expandable option. When it is not expanded, the mechanics do take more storage away compared to a non expandable one. But when expanded it holds just as much as my Monos Hybrid Carryon Plus. So for me it’s a nice trade off being able to take this internationally / domestically in the US. I have yet to take it internationally so I’m not sure if I will encounter weight constraints as it is heavier. With that being said the weight is not an issue for myself when lifting the bag. I am a 5’4 woman and can carry it just fine. Other things to keep in mind, when it’s open and laid flat the right side isn’t even. I had to place a bag or sweater underneath to support it so it wouldn’t keep shifting around while I was rummaging through it. When traveling with it expanded, I worry there is a chance it won’t fit in the overhead bin. I flew domestically recently and really had to shove it in the bin. The flight attendant had trouble closing the bin but she finally managed with some flight attendant magical technique. I will not lie, I was extremely anxious and did not want to be that passenger who held up the flight in some sort of way because her carryon would not fit. I NEVER had an issue with the monos, even though it’s bigger due to the different dimensions. To me it defeats the expandable feature as I am deterred from using it again in the future. Beautiful bag, but definitely has drawbacks

Stylish. Not your routine bag. The only reasons I give it a lesser rating : too heavy and not scratch proof. Within the US, as a carry on its still not weighed, you are OK. But take an international flight, you are allowed only 15 lbs and this piece completely empty weighs that much. So that's highly impractical. And a day will certainly come where a carry on will also be weighed in the US. And shouldn't be catching every single scratch and nick, not durable. Got it as a gift, too cool to return it, but not realistic. For the price, it must be light weight with the same looks.

I absolutely love my bag! Thought the expandable option isn’t as appealing when expanded it definitely gives space. I’ve recently used this as my carry on to Qatar and the damage is non existent. I do have a small concern with the handle where it seems a bit loose but I’ll take it to tumi to see if it’s an issue. However I was able to pack all necessities needed for a carryon for travel and it is great for 2-3 day travel. Can’t wait to add to my 19degree collection I’m in love!

Beautiful but mine barely survived being checked once and had some manufacturing inconsistencies even before that. It’s also heavy for the capacity, I assume due to the expansion mechanism (which ironically also reduces internal capacity). I would recommend looking elsewhere. Or opt for the non-expandable version at the very least. I ended up buying a Rimowa after seeing what a single checked trip did to the Tumi. I haven’t had to check that one yet but it’s lighter (not expandable for the record!) and seems sturdier. I do prefer the luggage handle on the Tumi.
