Smooth Coconut
This was my first Laboratory Perfumes candle, so I wanted to take my time before reviewing it. Let’s start with the positives.
The vessel is super fun, and I'm genuinely excited about repurposing it. I also happen to love this particular type of packaging, as it stores brilliantly. It's a wonderful thrower; delicate enough for the office but powerful enough for the living room. At the midpoint, I had to do about 3 concurrent burns with foil in order to maintain an even melt, but after that, it remained consistent.
The fragrance balance is on point. While I cannot distinctly pinpoint any of the other scent notes, they are definitely there, mellowing out the coconut scent and making it feel a bit more refined. I would recommend this to someone who wants to try a coconut scent but is nervous about it skewing “pina colada” or “sunscreen.”
So why am I being grumpy? (A) I’m a cardamom girl, and I’m always going to be a little letdown when I get a candle with the scent note but can’t smell it. (B) It sort of feels like they created a coconut candle but wanted to make it sound fancy, so they were like, “gorse flowers are known to smell a bit like coconut, let’s name it that.” Because this is a coconut candle. It is a lovely coconut candle, but I’d be lying if I said I got much of anything else.
