Great backpack
My son loves the print. The side pocket for the water bottle is so useful and also the front buckle so their backpack doesn’t fall off.

The change of size is definitely a turn off
I was excited to order youth XL and now it’s discontinued. The only place that I managed to find the XL was at Winner or Marshall. The youth size is definitely too small for the price. No thanks

Way too small
I read the reviews and got convinced from the last one from a lady that works at a store that sells Herschel and she said to get the youth size if you want a bigger backpack. This is WAY too small. No way I will fit my daughters lunch box, mitts, snow pants and books in this thing at all. If you are looking for a small backpack for a kid in a tropical climate that doesn’t need snow gear, then this is the back pack for you. Definitely not for us folk up in Canada and where we have winter for almost 6 months. Clearly returning this item.

Comfortable size, but Youth XL is better quality
I'm not sure why the XL was discontinued. I have this backpack in Youth XL, and now the new Youth size. The XL is about 2 inches taller, but the Youth is large enough for my 3rd grader's stuff, and a more comfortable size for her small build. It is a large enough size through 5th/6th grade. The new Youth size is also more lightweight and feels less stiff when worn. BUT it comes at a price. The bottom of the XL is 3 layers and feels very durable, while the new one is a single layer; not even lined. It feels pretty flimsy for a backpack that will hold school books, and I'm worried how it'll hold up. Also, on the new one, only the back is lined- there is no lining on the inside front panel either. I'm not sure if that's an advantage or disadvantage, because is is more lightweight that way. But in my opinion, leaving the bottom unlined comes across as cheap and makes the backpack a lot less durable. I hope it'll last nicely, but Herschel, please (double) line the bottom of the Youth backpacks like you did with the XL.
Pros:
*Large enough without being too large
*Good zippers, laptop sleeve and front pocket
*Sternum strap is easy to adjust or remove
*Water bottle pocket
*Zipper pulls are tied more smartly- they look cute and won't go missing like on the old one (cosmetic only)
Cons:
*Not as durable as the old style. Only the back is lined, and the rest of the backpack, including the bottom is a single layer.

Lowered craftsmanship.
I bought this youth backpack and comparing it to my last purchase two years ago you can tell the redesign came with some cost cutting measures. The backpack that was beautifully lined (with the PERFECT washable material) on all sides and zip pocket is now only lined on the back panel for the tablet sleeve, bye bye durability. The straps and handles are not the former strong material but a slippery, more narrow strap. Whilst before I thought this was an amazing product worth the price, I now see little difference to competitors products. The only reason I'm keeping it is because the child already has an emotional attachment to the backpack. Sad about the update as I had recommended this model to a few families.
