Daylite 40-Liter 22-Inch Wheeled Carry-On Duffle Bag

Just got back from two week carry-on only trip from US to Spain and France via Brittish Airways (their carry-on allowance is more generous in size and weight than even most US carriers). The two of us each had a carry-on and a backpack as a personal item. One of the carry-ons was a hardsided wheelie and mine was this Osprey Daylite. We were at a new location almost daily and were on trains, city buses, rented a car and often had a few floors of stairs to climb at lodging stays. For this particular trip, this bag wasn’t much more nimble than the standard hard sided wheelie that was also on the trip. My osprey daylight capacity was significantly less than the wheelie because of the daylight’s turtle shell shape. I loved having the backpack strap option, but since I was also traveling with a backpack, I didn’t use the straps on this trip. My osprey always rolled smoothly and I love the handle (I don’t like T-handles). The zippers worked great and the bag looked unscathed coming out of the baggage claim when we were all made to check carry-on out of Heathrow. The construction is great and it is indeed light when empty. Yes, it’s more streamlined than some of the other osprey carry-ons, but a few modifications with the next redesign would make this bag great: 1. Make it slightly less turtle shell shaped and trim all the dimensions to meet European carrier carry-on size limits (a lot of volume is lost with the current design due to how tapered the top of the bag is near the handle - but with little actual benefit since the H x L x W dimensions are too large for European airline carry-on except for Brittish Airways). 2. Please add a side grab handle. I’m 5’4”. I would be much easier to carry this up a few flights of stairs if I could carry it by a side handle. 3. Why does the u-shaped opening to the bag open upside down? Why? You can’t easily slip something in when the bag is standing upright. I didn’t think this would matter much but it remained annoying. I’ve had the bag too long to return, but I feel this one is a bit of a miss on the design end.

Only one journey behind but until now it has been very good for three weeks interrail.

I went on 6 flights with this and no problems. I have not needed to use it as a backpack, but I like the option in case it is needed. The only thing I wish it had, was a side handle, but as it is, there is little to get snagged on when it goes through the airport conveyor belts.

As another reviewer pointed out, the advertised dimensions are wrong. It is not 21. 5", but over 22", which makes it too big for a carry-on even on most domestic flights, not to mention international ones. I bought it hoping to be able to carry it on almost any airline. It's a shame because I love how light it is (and it's not a bad looking bag). Also I did not find the handle at all easy to extend and collapse. Instead of pushing a button, you need to squeeze the top and bottom of the handle together, which requires some amount of force since it's very stiff, and then it raises or lowers in a jerky manner, not smoothly.
