In 1973, Gordon Merchant was making board shorts out of his house in Australia and selling them to local surf shops. Word got out about the durability of the shorts—his triple-stitching technique handily conquered the tough Australian waves—and Billabong took off. The company has since expanded into other areas of clothing and accessories for men, women and kids.
