W!recutter praised the privacy approach of this brand, but their "on-frame caption" feature is such a huge breach that I am now skeptical of everything else Aura claims to do and fearful of how my pictures and information are used. DO NOT use their app or buy their physical frames until they remove this harmful feature!
If a photo is shared to multiple frames, EVERYTHING about that photo is visible to EVERY frame it's shared to. Including this new "On-Frame Caption." Even to users who only have access to one frame. And, any user can add a caption - not just the user who originally added the photo. In addition, because of the App's UI, it's next to impossible to figure out how to leave a comment on a photo. Where you'd think that feature would be when viewing an individual photo, there is instead the caption box. Thus, in our experience, any family member - even the savvy ones but especially the not particular tech savvy - will likely create a caption (visible across all frames) rather than leaving a comment (I think only visible to a single frame? Though frankly, it's very difficult to even access and view comments once they've been made, it's pretty horrible app UI, so hard for me to confirm this).
There is NO WAY to turn captions off entirely / disable the feature, and there is NO EASY WAY to keep them on a specific frame. I wish I had known this feature was coming (or that they had even at least communicated this new feature and its privacy implications once released), because if I had known I would NOT have purchased these frames/would have returned them before shipping to family, and absolutely chosen another brand. This has marred what should be a joyful time for our extended family (picture captions are being used like comments, with named sign offs, visible between estranged family members on different frames).
To be fully fair to Aura, here is the response in full that I received from Adam in customer service when I asked about this feature:
"I appreciate your comments on our new, free captions feature (On-Frame Captions) and understand your concerns.
At the moment, when a photo has been shared across multiple frames, the caption will appear on all of them. This happens because the photo file is identical, and the caption is applied to the photo itself, which has been shared to multiple frames by the photo owner.
At present, if you do not wish to have the caption shared across frames, then the only option is to not share the identical photo on frames where you do not wish the caption to appear, or to rename the file when sharing to another frame."
Yes, you read that right. Obviously, having to take all these extra steps that are this inefficient on our end - duplicating photos, changing file names (can that even be done easily on the phone??) - just to get around Aura's extremely poorly thought out design, while juggling a newborn, is so wildly infeasible and cruel that I’m honestly quite seriously upset it was even suggested to me as an option. And I thought this brand was supposed to be relatively thoughtful on the privacy front, but clearly not!

Best frame ever!
I recently bought this frame for my nursery and it’s STUNNING. I love updating my frame daily with photos of our newest bundle of joy. This is the only way to properly display your photos.
