How to Tie a Tie
Whether you're wondering how to tie a tie or you just want to get better at it, we've got you covered. Follow these easy step-by-step instructions to learn three essential tie knots, plus all the finer points of how to wear a tie.
How to Tie a Bow Tie
Learning to tie a bow tie is as much a rite of passage as learning to mix a proper martini. Master this iconic accessory to look your very best at formal events and everywhere else you'd like to spice up your style.
Step 1
Adjust the two sides of the tie so that one end is longer than the other.
Step 2
Cross the long end over the short end, then pull the long end under and through the neck loop and pull it until it's snug.
Step 3
Take the short end and fold it in half across your neck. Bring the long end over and down across the center.
Step 4
Starting at the left side, use your thumb to push the center of the long end through the loop at the back of the bow.
Step 5
Pull tight and adjust until even by pulling on both sides simultaneously.
How to Tie a Half-Windsor Knot
This versatile knot is as dapper and symmetrical as the full Windsor, but not quite as bulky. Wear it with a smaller collar and a trim-fit suit for maximum effect.
Step 1
Adjust the tie so that the wide end is longer than the narrow.
Step 2
Cross the wide end over the narrow end, then pull it under and through the neck loop.
Step 3
Pull the wide end across the front and up through the neck loop once more.
Step 4
Push the wide end down through the knot you've just created and pull it snug.
How to Tie a Four-in-Hand Knot
This is one of the simplest and most versatile of all the knots, ideal for thinner ties. It's a business-casual go-to, not as formal as the Windsor or half-Windsor you'd choose for a more formal event.
Step 1
Adjust the tie so that the wide end is longer than the narrow.
Step 2
Cross the wide end over the narrow end, then under, then over again. Pull the wide end up through the neck loop.
Step 3
Push the wide end down through the knot you've just created.
Step 4
With one hand on the narrow end, pull it snug. Use your finger to form a dimple underneath the knot.
