At Home with Kristin Cavallari
The TV personality and mom of three on Southern hospitality and how her kids helped her find the beauty in imperfection.
By Tessa Trudeau
Far from the shores of Laguna Beach and the hills of Hollywood where we first met her, Kristin Cavallari now enjoys the comforts of country living in Nashville. Alongside her husband, former NFL player Jay Cutler, and their three children, Camden, six; Jaxon, four; and Saylor, three, the designer and author has embraced life in Tennessee, where she films her TV series, Very Cavallari, and runs her brand, Uncommon James. Her jewelry has been available at Nordstrom since April 2018, and now we are excited to add the kitchen and housewares collection, Uncommon James Home.
Although she still lives in the public eye, Cavallari has found tranquility in her new home. "It's very representative of the simple, quiet life we enjoy living here," she says. Cavallari welcomed us in to talk about her country-chic aesthetic and letting go of the notion of perfection.
What do you love about your home?
I live out in the Tennessee country now. It's incredibly peaceful and quiet. We have our own mini farm with chickens—having fresh eggs has been a dream!
How would you describe your home aesthetic?
Traditional and rustic. Since we live in the country, we tried to capture the Southern rustic farm vibe—with a touch of femininity here and there, of course.
Where do you find inspiration when decorating?
My home's interior is inspired by my travels, my love of simplicity and the beauty of the landscape surrounding us. I love to bring in chic, feminine touches to balance the earthy tones and materials throughout the house.
What are your favorite items from your own homewares brand, Uncommon James?
I'm obsessed with copper, so the copper wine glasses and copper teakettle–they are useful and can double as decor.
What's the best home decor advice you've ever received?
To always have fresh flowers and candles glowing to create a warm, inviting feeling.
What’s your favorite room for family time?
Our living room/TV room. We moved the coffee table to the side so that it's essentially a big playroom. It's not the prettiest room in my house, but it's very true to who we are as a family. It's where we spend the most time together. Toys are scattered all around and there are stains on the couch, but that’s part of having three little kids!
How has being a mom changed your home aesthetic?
I've had to give up on everything being perfect. I have clean, modern toy bins that match my decor, so at least the mess is organized and stylish!
You published a cookbook, True Roots, last year. What’s your go-to recipe for entertaining?
It depends on how many people are coming. If it's a smaller group, apricot-glazed stuffed pork chops. For a large group, chicken ragù. Those are two never-fail recipes.
Any other entertaining tips for spring or summer get-togethers?
Entertaining is all about good drinks, finger foods and great candles. And it's fun to have a specialty cocktail for larger groups.
