The Sisters Behind Veronica Beard
The two Veronica Beards share the secrets of their close working and family relationship.
By Britt Burritt
For New York–based sisters-in-law Veronica Swanson Beard and Veronica Miele Beard, their busy lifestyles (they have eight children between them) influence their mutually eponymous label of classic-cool, versatile staples.
How did you meet?
VMB: We met at a wedding in 2002. I remember Veronica’s sister approaching me and saying, “So you are the other Veronica? You must meet my sister.” It was destiny.
VSB: It was the same night I met my husband [Jamie Beard]. Looking back now, that night brought me most of what I love about my life today.
Why did you decide to work together?
VMB: We both love fashion, but especially talking about entrepreneurial ideas and ways to service women and their glamorous yet hectic lives. The dickey jacket was the Wonder Woman cape that we started with.
VSB: We talked endlessly about ideas and it was finally almost like a dare.
What’s the best part of working together?
VSB: Sharing a name, being family.
VMB: We laugh, fight and cry. I found the sister I never had!
How do your skills complement each other’s?
VMB: Veronica is a dreamer and I’m a realist by nature. I’m very big picture and Veronica loves the details.
How do you divide up responsibilities?
VSB: We have different interests: I love home decor, she loves travel. But we use our vantage as women to design and collaborate on almost everything at Veronica Beard.
Do you have any special ways that you collaborate?
VMB: We never take offense anymore about honest feedback. We just say it. We say things that only a sister would say.
VSB: Veronica and I disagree but at the end of the day our loyalty is to one another. It’s very important for us to have a unified front.
When you disagree, how do you reconcile your opinions?
VMB: We sit on it and usually come to the middle somehow. If we see it’s really important to the other, we try to accommodate it. We pick our battles wisely.
What is the advantage of being a female team in fashion?
VMB: That we walk in the customers’ shoes every day. I always say, “We are our customer.”
VSB: We make smart, informed decisions that come from our gut.
