Rosetta Getty on her Newest Collection
FASHION DESIGNER ROSETTA GETTY TALKS ASTROLOGY, SPIRITUALITY AND STYLE—AND THE MODERNIST ART MOVEMENT THAT INSPIRED HER LATEST COLLECTION.
By Tessa Trudeau
"The whole reason my brand exists is because I couldn't find the clothes that I had envisioned in my mind," says Rosetta Getty. "So, I created them." The designer, who lives in Los Angeles with actor-husband Balthazar Getty and their four children—son Cassius and daughters Violet, Grace and June—founded her eponymous modern luxury line in 2015, and it echoes her own sense of style and taste—not only in fashion but also in art. "People often ask me what other designers I like to wear on a daily basis, and truthfully, I really do only wear my own designs because they are a true reflection of my signature style."
How would you describe your personal style?
Understated, unexpected elegance.
Tell us about your creative practice and where you find inspiration.
My collections are often inspired by contemporary art. I'm lucky enough to have collaborated with some incredible talents over the years, from Analia Saban to Alicja Kwade and, most recently, Anna-Sophie Berger, who shot our Pre-Fall 2020 lookbook at her studio in Brooklyn.
What inspired your latest collection?
My Spring/Summer 2020 collection was inspired by the Bauhaus art movement—more specifically, the contrast between the interiors and exteriors of iconic Bauhaus architecture. From the outside, Bauhaus buildings tend to be sharp and austere, while the interiors often contain spontaneous bursts of primary colors, and these opposing visual moods play out through the line. Our signature double-breasted suit, for example, has a simple, understated silhouette but is crafted from a bold, red geometric jacquard.
We heard you're into astrology. What is your sign and how does that play into your life and your work?
I am very into astrology! My star sign is Libra, and I like to have regular readings. Librans are known for having an affinity for beauty and beautiful things as well as a connection with the arts. I think that being a Libra plays into every aspect of my life—it's all energy, and I think that energy affects everything on a level that we probably can't yet comprehend.
Are there any other spiritual practices you enjoy?
I think that crystals and their energies are fascinating, but I think I need to learn more about them in order to appreciate their power. I do love to meditate—I think it's the answer to everything! In fact, I try to meditate every day at this point.
What is your typical day like? What's your favorite part?
A typical day is both extremely busy and extremely varied. One day, I can be looking for inspiration at a lesser-known gallery in Los Angeles, such as The Underground Museum, and the next, I'll spend the whole day in my studio editing looks for our next seasonal collection or experimenting with new accessories. Though I love being at work, there's nothing better than walking through the front door of my house after a long day and seeing my family.
How do you relax outside of your work?
I like to watch nature or gardening documentaries with my husband, Balthazar.
What is your favorite form of self-care?
Well, I love a good massage. I also practice yoga regularly.
Are you reading anything right now?
Yes, I'm reading a parenting book called Raising Grateful Kids in An Entitled World by Kristen Welch. I have four teenagers, so …
What are you currently looking forward to?
The evolution of my brand—we have several big, very exciting projects on the horizon. I'm not able to discuss them just yet, unfortunately, but stay tuned!
