2025 Sustainability Goals
We're setting big goals to make an even bigger impact for the good of the earth. Here's what we're doing—and how we're doing it.
"Nordstrom believes we have a responsibility to leave the world better than we found it, and our customers increasingly feel the same," says Pete Nordstrom, president and chief brand officer of Nordstrom. "As we navigate recent events in these unprecedented times, one thing is clear: global issues will require the kind of bold action that is only possible with cooperation and coordination from all of us. It is our hope that together with our customers, we can work toward a more sustainable future for us and generations to come."
We want to be better, and we know you do too—and that starts with doing better. So we're making a promise to you and to the planet. As part of this pledge, we're focusing our efforts on three key impact areas for environmental sustainability: climate change, circularity and the environmental impact of our products and services. We've set a number of new and ambitious goals that aim to minimize our environmental impact as a company by 2025.
Global climate change is a long-term crisis that will affect us all, and we aim to reduce our contribution to this emergency while also supporting systemic changes. Our climate change goals are to:
1. Set a science-based target to reduce our Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions
2. Contribute at least $250,000 in corporate grants in support of efforts to slow and prevent climate change
We believe that circularity for products, packaging and other materials is part of the future, and we are committed to supporting progress in this area. Our goals for circularity are to:
1. Take back 100 tons of beauty packaging to ensure it's recycled
2. Help customers extend the life of 250 tons of clothing through donation
3. Contribute $1 million in corporate grants to support industry innovation for textile recycling
4. Establish an internal working group to support the development of circular Nordstrom Made products
We'll be decreasing the environmental impact of our products and services by making better choices in procurement, manufacturing, packaging and design. Our goals in this area are to:
1. Reduce single-use plastic in our value chain by 50%
2. Ensure 15% of our product assortment qualifies for our Sustainable Style category
3. Use sustainably sourced raw materials for 50% of Nordstrom Made products made primarily of cotton, polyester and cellulosic fibers
Addressing environmental sustainability issues at a global scale can't be done alone. We're partnering with industry-leading organizations, and we're making grants to support programs, research and education.
To learn about circularity and collaborate with peers in our industry, we joined the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's Make Fashion Circular initiative as a participant. We've also joined the Sustainable Packaging Coalition as a member and are using its resources to support packaging and materials decisions for Nordstrom Made products, in-store packaging and packaging that flows through our supply chain. And we're a new member of CDP Supply Chain, through which we'll learn more about the carbon footprint of our suppliers. We're also exploring industry coalitions where we can show our support for the growth of renewable energy in the U.S.
We are continuing to participate with the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, the Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay transportation program and the Evergreen Carbon Capture program, which is led by a local Seattle partner, Forterra. Nordstrom also supports The Nature Conservancy's work to take on the planet's biggest challenges, and we recently made a new $100,000 grant in honor of Earth Day 2020.
Last August, when we announced our participation in the G7 Fashion Pact, a coalition of global luxury retailers working to mitigate the environmental impact of the fashion industry, we vowed to make bold commitments that would help us reach our goals. We are continuing to look for opportunities to make more-sustainable choices across our business and support positive changes across our industry. We intend to share new objectives and programs in the future, in addition to more information about how we plan to achieve these. We're proud of the work we're doing and are excited to meet these goals with the help of our customers. We hope you'll join us.
