April 22, 2021, will mark the 51st anniversary of Earth Day. To announce the very first event, a small nonprofit ran a full-page ad in The New York Times proclaiming April 22, 1970, as Earth Day: a day of environmental action and education. Viewed a half-century later, many of the ad's messages seem ahead of their time, including this: "On April 22 we start to reclaim the environment we have wrecked. … Earth Day is a commitment to make life better, not just bigger and faster; to provide real rather than rhetorical solutions."
That 1970 newspaper ad also asked readers to look beyond tomorrow and seek a future worth living—a core principle at the heart of today's environmental-protection movement.
The urgent need to save our planet is changing the way things are being done—and the way products are being made—in various industries around the world. Apparel companies are updating their practices and moving toward more sustainable fashion.
Nordstrom offers an ever-expanding range of products from companies who are committed to responsible manufacturing processes. Sustainable Style is our online collection featuring ethical clothing from sustainable brands. Our partners include companies committed to fair-trade practices. And many of our partners offer give-back programs that benefit the Earth and the people and animals who live on it. Nordstrom's Sustainable Style hub is also where customers can search for organic clothing or eco-friendly clothing made from recycled fabrics.
How can we best celebrate the golden anniversary of Earth Day? Simply by behaving like loyal fans and protectors of our planet. Every action counts, whether big or small. And of course, every day is the perfect day to honor Mother Earth.
So, fellow earthlings, here are just a handful of ideas to get you started:
Join friends and family outside to admire nature. Urge your elected representatives to support policies that protect the planet and its natural resources. Join a community clean-up event. Opt for organic and locally grown food. Test out a heavily plant-based diet—or recommit to one. Grow some of your own food, even if you start small with herbs in containers. Donate to a nonprofit dedicated to protecting the environment. Step up your recycling game. Give your unwanted apparel to Nordstrom's clothing donation program or another program that ensures it will be used and won't go to a landfill. Repair a favorite garment rather than replace it. Drive and ride less, walk and bike more—and up your use of public transportation. Enjoy a nature photo scavenger hunt with people you love. Read an ahead-of-its-time book like Diet for a Small Planet or a timeless ode to nature like Thoreau's Walden. Give one of your vintage Earth Day shirts to a young person who's eager to be a part of the solution.
Here's wishing us all an optimistic and action-filled Earth Day 2021. With enough of us being the change we want to see in the world, we remarkably ingenious and hardworking humans can join together to save our beautiful planet.
Happy Earth Day!
