Area Rugs
An area rug is simply a decorative rug that adds comfort, warmth, dimension and a better sense of space. They're not meant to take up the entire room, but rather act as a sort of frame for the furniture. Larger rug sizes (5x7, 8x10, 9x12) are perfect for bigger spaces—think dining room rugs, bedroom rugs, and living room rugs. Conversely, smaller rug sizes (3x5, 4x6) are better for smaller rooms in the house—think kitchen rugs, bathroom rugs, and entryway rugs.
Outdoor Rugs
Whether a neutral hue or a splashy design, an outdoor rug can quickly liven up your outdoor patio. Typically made with a durable, water-resistant material, outdoor throw rugs create a more unified and cozy-feeling reprieve. (Save your pricey boutique rug for inside.) They're a brilliant way to extend your living area from inside to outdoors.
Runners
A runner rug is long and narrow, making it ideal for spaces that are shaped similarly. For instance, they're a great addition to entryways, bathrooms and kitchens. Since this type of rug is often in high-traffic places, it's extra important to place a non-slip rug pad underneath. A plush rug pad can also be nice in the kitchen, where we tend to be on our feet for longer.
Best Rug Styles
Rugs come in many different styles to accommodate your home decor aesthetic. Choose from more traditional styles such as Persian, Moroccan or oriental, or lean into contemporary rugs, modern rugs or even boho or farmhouse styles. Within each of these styles you'll find a range of textures and weaves. There are shag rugs and braided rugs, as well as rugs made from wool, jute, plush or tufted carpet, cowhide and sheepskin. Not all of these are easily washable, though, so consider your needs in every room. (For example, kitchen rugs, outdoor rugs, and kids rugs should be hardy.) Also note that there are circle rugs in addition to runners and traditional rectangle shapes that go great with accent furniture.
What is the Best Rug Size for Every Room?
The best rug size for every room ultimately depends on the size of the room itself. You can refer to the follow measurements as a guide:
- Living room — 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, 9x12, 12x15
- Kitchen — 2x3, 3x5, 4x6, 2.5x10, 3x12
- Bathroom – 2x3, 3x5, 4x6, 2.5x10
How To Clean an Area Rug
All area rugs have different cleaning techniques depending on the material and weave. While there are some washable rugs that you can throw into the washing machine and dryer, most do require professional cleaning about once every one to two years. You may also be able to do some spot-cleaning at home depending on the rug type, but always follow label instructions carefully.
